If you are the person who has to buy a Schneider Electric switchboard but you don't design electrical systems for a living, this checklist is for you.
I am an office administrator, not an engineer. I manage purchasing for a 200-person company, and in 2022 I got pulled into a switchboard replacement for our office expansion. That project taught me that buying power equipment is 20% electrical work and 80% asking the right questions.
Here is the six-step checklist I now use. It won't replace a licensed electrical contractor, but it will keep you from making the expensive mistakes that come from treating a switchboard like a normal office supply order.
Step 1: Define What 'Box' You Are Actually Buying
Before you ask for quotes, define the box. A switchboard is not a single SKU in Schneider Electric's catalog like a box of pens. It is a configured assembly: a metal enclosure, main breaker or switch, busbars, outgoing breakers, metering, and sometimes a Modbus gateway.
When I compared the three quotes from our first project side by side, I finally understood why scope matters more than price. One quote covered only the empty enclosure. Another included breakers but no metering. The third was the only one that could actually be installed without surprise costs.
Write down at least these items in your request:
- Single enclosure or multi-section switchboard
- Main incoming rating and voltage
- Number and ratings of outgoing ways
- Spare ways for future use
- Metering or power monitoring requirements
- Form of separation for maintenance access
If you are not sure about the technical items, get the electrical contractor to define them before you talk to suppliers. You will save yourself three impossible-to-compare quotes.
Step 2: Verify Part Numbers, Not Just Product Family Names
Schneider Electric sells switchboards as configured systems. The product family name is only the beginning. The real ordering language is a long list of part numbers, options, and drawings.
Searching for 'schneider-electric switchboard' online can help you find the right catalog page, but don't order from the product family name alone. My rookie mistake was ordering a replacement main breaker without checking the trip unit code. The vendor sent the right frame in the wrong trip rating. It looked fine from the outside. The electrician caught it before installation, but the return process cost us over two weeks.
Trust me on this one: have the electrical contractor review the bill of materials before you place the order. The distributor's salesperson is helpful, but they are not the one who has to fit the box into your electrical room.
Step 3: Nail Down Lead Time and Documentation Before Price
Switchboards are made to order, and lead time can be a deal-breaker. I had a project where the low quote came with a 'typical' delivery of 8 weeks. The project deadline was 5 weeks. We paid a rush fee, and the switchboard still arrived after the electrical contractor's crew had moved on. That scheduling mess cost more than a faster supplier would have charged.
Ask for these in writing:
- Manufacturing lead time
- Shipping method and delivery window
- Installation drawings and test certificates
- Documentation language and format
- Warranty registration process
The lowest quoted price is not the lowest total cost if it doesn't include the paperwork you need. My accounting team would rather pay for a clear invoice than save money and spend hours chasing delivery dates.
Step 4: Ask for Modbus Protocol Support From Day One
This is the step most people skip when buying Schneider Electric switchboards, and it is the one I would redo first if I had the chance.
A modern switchboard is not just a metal box with breakers. Inside, trip units, power meters, and controllers are constantly measuring voltage, current, power, and energy. The question is whether you can read that data. In most Schneider Electric setups, the answer is the Modbus protocol.
Modbus Protocol Overview: Schneider Electric and the Open Standard
Modbus is a communication protocol originally developed by Modicon, a company that later became part of Schneider Electric, back in 1979. It was designed to let industrial devices share data over simple serial connections. Today it remains one of the most widely used open protocols in power and industrial automation.
In simple terms, a Modbus network works like this:
- The switchboard's devices hold data in registers.
- A master device, such as a gateway, PLC, or energy display, requests that data.
- The data travels back over RS-485 cabling or TCP/IP, depending on the system design.
For a buyer, you don't need to memorize addresses or function codes. You do need to ask two questions:
- Does the specified switchboard include Modbus communication for the main breaker and energy meter, or is it an optional extra?
- Can you get the Modbus register map before you approve the design? This document tells the monitoring software what data is available and where.
Why does this matter? Because adding Modbus monitoring after installation means opening enclosures, adding wiring, reprogramming controllers, and a second commissioning visit. When we changed our project from 'just switchboard' to 'switchboard with monitoring,' the retrofit quote was more than double the factory-option price.
The best analogy I can offer is a transparent smartphone. You want to tap an app and see what is happening inside the electrical room. The Modbus protocol makes that possible. Without it, the switchboard is a black box with a lock on it.
If you have ever looked up how to unlock a phone to get into hidden settings, you already get the idea: the hardware can do more than the default view shows. Modbus is the unlock method for your switchboard data.
Step 5: Think About Installation Space and Future Access
On the same project, I spent an entire afternoon worrying about the delivery date while nobody checked the door width in the electrical room. The switchboard was 1200 mm wide. The door opening was 1000 mm. We had to remove the door frame on moving day.
Before you sign the order, walk the route from the truck to the final location. Check:
- Door widths and hallway turns
- Floor load and levelness
- Cable entry from top or bottom
- Working clearance in front of the switchboard
- Space for future sections
This is also the time to ask about local support. In 2024, I had a small order for one switchboard for a satellite office. I went back and forth between a local distributor and a large national supplier. On paper, the national supplier had a lower price. But the local distributor answered the phone, let me ask basic questions, and treated the single switchboard like it mattered. That small order turned into our annual maintenance contract. Small doesn't mean unimportant; it means potential.
Step 6: Check Certifications Before Final Payment
A Schneider Electric switchboard should come with type-test documentation and a nameplate. The applicable standard depends on your location. In Europe and many other regions, low-voltage switchgear assemblies are tested to IEC 61439. In North America, a switchboard is often tested to UL 891. If the product is a control panel rather than a switchboard, UL 508A may apply. Ask your supplier which standard applies to your project.
Don't accept 'certified' as a single word. Ask for the certificate number or the test report reference. If the supplier hesitates, that is a red flag.
Also register the product warranty when the switchboard arrives. I have seen warranty paperwork fail because nobody registered the product and the serial number was not in the system. That part of the job is very much an administrative one, and it is exactly the kind of thing a buyer should not skip.
What I Learned the Hard Way
If you only take one thing from this checklist, make it this: the switchboard is not the product. The product is a verified, documented, installable system that meets your current needs and your future monitoring plan.
A few final warnings:
- Don't assume the breakers include Modbus connectivity. It is often an option, and the part number changes when you add it.
- Don't let the salesperson rush you into ordering before the contractor approves the drawings. Drawing approval is free insurance.
- Don't put commissioning support on the 'nice to have' list. The first power-on of a new switchboard is when control wiring errors show up. Having an experienced partner on site for one day is worth more than any discount.
- Don't compare quotes by enclosure size alone. Outgoing breaker count, main rating, metering, and Modbus registers are the real cost drivers.
And if someone treats a single switchboard order like a nuisance because it is small, that tells you more than any brochure. The vendors who answer the awkward questions, share the register map, and confirm the certifications are the ones you keep. I know that now, after one very expensive phone call and a much better second project.
